OUR PROJECTS
Under the Altair Astronomy & Space umbrella, a number of start-up initiatives and collaborative projects are taking shape. While astronomy is at our core, our work also extends into related fields such as satellite data and other space science applications.

Thalasat
Monitoring and Visualizing Mediterranean
Sea Health via Space Technologies
Thalasat is a Cyprus-born, youth-led initiative under Altair Astronomy & Space, using satellite data and AI to monitor Mediterranean sea health.
It provides near real-time insights on harmful algal blooms, marine heatwaves, and water quality using data from the Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS). The system transforms complex environmental data into accessible visualizations for scientists, policymakers, smaller coastal regions, and the public.
Thalasat supports sustainable marine governance through early-warning systems and predictive analytics. It is designed to be scalable across the Mediterranean, and eventually globally, with initial applications in regions like Venice and the Aegean.
Operating as an independent non-profit, Thalasat plans to reinvest in conservation efforts and marine public environmental awareness.

Our Journey
Thalasat started as a simple idea, just a spark of curiosity and a proposal written by one person. Since then, it has grown into a full-fledged project with a clear mission, a working prototype, and a passionate team behind it. From the first draft to international recognition, collaboration with scientific institutions, and startup development in Italy, this timeline captures our journey, one step at a time.
An Idea is Born
March 2025
It all began when I came across the pan-European VenetoStars competition. Inspired by the opportunity, I started developing the idea for Thalasat on my own, writing the proposal, defining the goals, and shaping the vision for a platform that uses satellite data and AI to protect marine ecosystems.
Venice Awaits
April 2025
After receiving the exciting news that our proposal was selected for the finals, we got to work building the first version of the platform. We slowly began shaping the core of Thalasat and preparing our pitch and presentation for the challenge finals, set to take place in Venice.
And the Winner Is...
May 2025
In Venice, we presented Thalasat live at Space Meetings Veneto 2025 in front of the competition jury. It was an incredible moment and we managed to win the finals. That marked the real beginning of Thalasat’s journey.
Vision into Action
June 2025
Following the win, we developed the project into a working prototype. We began reaching out to experts and institutions for scientific feedback and collaboration, including the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute (CMMI) and MER Lab in Limassol. Furthermore we began preparing the presentation as well for our week back in Venice!
Learning, Pitching, and Growing
July 2025
We returned to Italy and spent a full week at the H-Farm innovation campus, further developing Thalasat as a startup. It was an intense, hands-on experience, we improved our prototype, refined our pitch, and connected with inspiring individuals in the space and blue economy sectors. We presented in front of ESA BIC representatives, Italian university professors and researchers, and government officials, representatives of the Veneto region.
What’s Next?
Present
Now back in Cyprus, we’re continuing to work on Thalasat, refining the platform, exploring new ideas, and planning how to move the project forward. Our goal remains clear: to combine science, technology, and outreach to protect our marine environments.
