A Night Under the Dolomite Sky: Our Visit to the Helmut Ullrich Astronomical Observatory

Earlier this month, as part of our journey to Venice for the Veneto Stars Challenge 2025, the Altair Astronomy team had the incredible opportunity to explore one of Italy’s most striking astronomical sites, the Helmut Ullrich Astronomical Observatory in the Dolomites.

We were in Venice to present Thalasat, our satellite-driven space education initiative (more on that under “Our Projects” on the Altair Astronomy website). After winning the competition, a moment of immense pride for our entire team, we decided to head north to Cortina d'Ampezzo, where the observatory is located. It was the perfect way to end an already unforgettable trip.

Coming from Cyprus, the contrast in sky quality was astonishing. Perched at an altitude of 1,780 meters in the heart of the Dolomites, the observatory offers not only a commanding view of the mountains but also one of the darkest skies we’ve ever experienced. It was absolutely breathtaking, a reminder of why we fell in love with astronomy in the first place.

Despite slightly less-than-ideal astronomical conditions, we had the chance to use the observatory’s 400mm reflecting telescope along with Alexandra Epiphaniou, our Administrative Assistant, and observe a few deep space objects! It was a truly special experience, combining both the raw beauty of the site and the power of scientific instrumentation.

We were warmly welcomed by Mr. Giuseppe Menardi, who was not only an exceptional host but also a passionate and knowledgeable guide. He shared with us the history of the observatory and gave us a personal tour of the facilities. His kindness, enthusiasm, and deep love for astronomy left a lasting impression on all of us.

This visit wasn’t just a detour, it was a source of inspiration! It reminded us of how universal our passion for the cosmos is, and how important it is to foster collaboration, education, and exploration across borders.

We are incredibly grateful to Mr. Menardi for his hospitality, and to everyone involved in the Veneto Stars Challenge for giving us a platform to share our vision.

Until next time, keep looking up!
